About This Position

Vice President of Operations – Job DescriptionPosition SummaryThe Vice President of Operations is responsible for the overall operational performance of the company’s single terminal logistics operation in West Michigan, overseeing Less Than Truckload (LTL) transportation, Full Truckload (FTL), and warehousing services. This executive leader will drive safety, service excellence, cost control, operational profitability, and operational scalability while ensuring compliance, employee engagement, and strong customer relationships.The ideal candidate brings hands-on operational leadership experience in LTL transportation and/or warehouse environments, with a track record of improving efficiency, margins, and service performance in a terminal based operation.Key ResponsibilitiesOperational Leadership
  • Provide full operational oversight of transportation operations, dock operations, linehaul coordination, pickup and delivery, and warehouse activities.
  • Lead day-to-day terminal operations to ensure safety, quality, efficiency, and on-time service performance.
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) related to service, cost, safety, labor productivity, and asset utilization.
Safety & Compliance
  • Champion a strong safety-first culture across all operations.
  • Collaborate closely with Safety to ensure compliance with DOT, OSHA, FMCSA, state, and local regulations.
Financial & Cost Management
  • Manage operating budgets, labor planning, and expense control to meet profitability targets for each service line, while maximizing consolidated performance.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce costs through process improvement, routing optimization, labor efficiency, and vendor management.
  • Partner with finance and executive leadership on forecasting and operational planning.
Warehouse Operations
  • Oversee warehousing functions including inbound/outbound freight, storage, inventory control, and value-added services.
  • Ensure warehouse space is utilized efficiently while maintaining accuracy, damage control, and customer service standards.
Leadership & People Management
  • Exemplify professionalism and act as a role model for our core values.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop leadership, including operations managers, supervisors, and frontline leaders.
  • Drive accountability, performance management, and employee engagement across operations.
  • Collaborate closely with HR on hiring, training, retention, and succession planning.
Customer Experience & Growth Support
  • Serve as a senior operational point of contact for key customers.
  • Partner with sales and customer service teams to support customer retention, service improvements, and growth initiatives.
  • Support onboarding of new customers and operational readiness for expanded business.
Process Improvement & Technology
  • Lead change management through translation of strategic vision into operational excellence.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives using lean, Six Sigma, or similar methodologies.
  • Evaluate and optimize the use of TMS, WMS, labor management, and other operational systems.
  • Ensure operational processes scale efficiently as the business grows.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in supply chain, transportation, business, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 8+ years of progressive leadership experience in logistics, LTL transportation, and/or warehousing operations.
  • Proven experience managing terminal based operations; single terminal or regional hub experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of DOT and warehouse safety regulations.
  • Demonstrated success in cost control, operational improvement, and service performance.
  • Hands on leadership style with the ability to balance strategic thinking and day to day execution.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and decision-making skills.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience with Truckmate Transportation Management System
  • Experience in privately held, growth-oriented logistics companies.
  • Familiarity with Midwest or Great Lakes region freight markets.
  • Experience integrating LTL and warehousing operations within a single facility.
Role Structure
  • Executive-level leadership role reporting to the President with direct impact on company performance.
  • Opportunity to help shape the operational strategy of a growth-oriented logistics organization in West Michigan.
