POSITION PURPOSE:
The Visual Arts Assistant Unit Head of camp is responsible for supporting the Camp Director in supervising a unit of Counselors, Junior Counselors and Specialists fostering a collaborative environment, serving as an overall leader for the group during all activities, trips or camp programming.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assist in managing, overseeing, and supervising all campers and staff within assigned unit.
- Serve as Assistant supervisor for all counselors in the designated unit. Assist in performing evaluations for these counselors.
- Assist in overseeing the day to day program operations of the Unit, including scheduling, activities and rainy day activities.
- Assist in coordinating activities of staff in unit: daytime activities and unit activities.
- Liaises with Unit Head in regards to the programming for their assigned units.
- Assist Unit Head in running Unit staff meetings. Attend meetings as member of camp’s Leadership Team.
- Assist Unit Head in planning, preparation, and implementation of all evening programs for assigned Unit.
- Assist Unit Head in coordinating activities of cabins in the unit, staff days off, etc.
- Act as role model for unit staff. Be a ”counselor’s counselor”, assisting unit/department staff with problems and questions.
- Regularly assist in evaluating the performance of unit staff members, following the set guidelines.
- Act on behalf of unit on issues involving the camp community.
- Assist Unit Head in running staff meetings.
- Participate in and lead pre-camp training/orientation.
- Help prepare for camp opening and closing.
- Serve as next step after counselors in camper behavior modification.
- Be directly involved with all campers and staff in unit. Communicate with the Camp Director on key matters.
- At least 21 years of age or older preferred.
- Minimum of three years working in camp, or camp-like setting; Judaic background a plus but not required.
- Ability to teach skills to other staff members and campers of all ages.
- Strong communication and problem solving skills.
- Experience communicating and working with families with children of varying abilities.
- Ability to remain calm and maintain perspective under pressure.
- Commitment to work collaboratively with others.
- Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing needs.
- Much be energetic, enthusiastic and demonstrate and desire to go the extra mile.
