About This Position
Position Overview
We are seeking a Certified Firefighter with EMT credentials to serve as an instructor for high school students enrolled in an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or First Responder pathway program.
The ideal candidate will bring real-world emergency response experience into the classroom, equipping students with foundational EMT knowledge, hands-on skills training, safety awareness, and professional discipline required for careers in emergency services.
This position plays a critical role in preparing students for post-secondary education, industry certifications, and careers in fire rescue, EMS, healthcare, and public safety.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver engaging classroom and hands-on EMT instruction aligned with state and district standards
Teach foundational emergency medical skills, including:
CPR/AED
Basic life support (BLS)
Patient assessment
Trauma response
Airway management
First aid procedures
Incorporate real-world emergency response scenarios and simulations
Ensure compliance with all safety protocols and industry standards
Prepare students for EMT certification exams (if applicable)
Maintain accurate student attendance, grades, and performance records
Collaborate with school administration and program coordinators
Promote professionalism, teamwork, leadership, and public service values
Serve as a mentor and career advisor to students interested in fire rescue or EMS careers
Minimum Qualifications
Retired Firefighter in good standing
Current or previously licensed EMT (State certification required; Paramedic certification preferred but not required)
CPR/BLS Instructor Certification (or ability to obtain)
Minimum 2 years of field experience in fire rescue or EMS
Ability to pass background screening required for school district employment
Strong classroom management and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
Experience teaching or mentoring youth
Fire Instructor I or II certification
Familiarity with state education standards for EMT or Public Safety programs
Skills & Competencies
Strong leadership presence
Ability to translate field experience into practical instruction
Patience and ability to work with diverse high school populations
High ethical standards and professionalism
Commitment to safety and student development
Work Environment
Classroom and skills-lab environment
Occasional outdoor training exercises
Must be able to demonstrate physical EMT procedures
