Job Summary

Lifeguards are responsible for keeping the pool and surrounding area safe and appropriately responding to emergencies that may occur. This role is additionally responsible for keeping various aspects of the pool area in order, including the office, equipment room, and deck. This position reports to the Aquatics Supervisor and receives direct supervision and direction from the Aquatics Supervisor.

Essential Functions and Tasks

· Provide proper surveillance while lifeguarding from the designated areas.

· Consistently, enforce all pool rules, including preventing incidents by regulating lap lanes to ensure swimmers are in the appropriate lanes and that everyone is welcome to swim.

· Maintain the aquatics equipment and areas, including the office and supply areas with a high attention to cleanliness and safety.

· Manage emergencies to ensure proper care, notification of emergency contacts, and activation of the chain of command.

· Record chemical readings, water temperature, pool inspections, accident/incident reports, participant statistics

· Complete opening tasks, remove pool covers, ensure all safety equipment is on LG stands and ready, unlocking all doors, and ensuring ADA access.

· Arrive on time for your shift with your uniform and rescue equipment worn and ready to use in case of an emergency.

· Commit to working your scheduled shifts as outlined in the scheduling policy or finding subs unless otherwise directed by your supervisor.

· Perform all opening and closing shift duties.

· Complete all required in services, training and re-certifications on time.

· Sell membership and concessions to the public and staff.

· Report any facility problems or concerns to management, including rescue equipment, fitness equipment, and other pool environmental issues.

· Promote the Aquatics programming and familiarize yourself with what we offer to members.

· Attend all in-service training, including those outside of regular working hours.

· Complete all other duties as assigned by your supervisor

Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA’s) · Physical skills as required in the National Lifeguard Pool Certification· Perform Standard First Aid and CPR-C skills as required in the Standard First Aid Certification (or equivalent Certification)· Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing.· Ability to learn and implement emergency assistance according to the EAP.· Ability to grow and develop lifesaving techniques.· Ability to be reliable and responsible for assigned shifts.· Knowledge and understanding of organizational policies, procedures, and systems.· Ability to demonstrate proper swimming techniques.· Must be able to respond to customer questions, building trust and respect.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be a minimum of 15 years of age.
  • Obtained an approved Work Permit
  • Required Certificates:
    • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training.
    • Current American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.
    • First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22) within six months of hire
  • Ability to work mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays

Experience: Entry level, no work experience up to a minimum of 250 prior worked hours

Physical Demands and Work Environment The position works in both indoor and outdoor environments, subject to severe hot, cold, and inclement weather. The physical demands of this position are described below.· Standing, walking, and sitting for up to 90 minutes continuously· Swim, tow and/or carry a victim up to 60m· Climbing stairs, ladders, and ramps while carrying first aid equipment and dismounting from lifeguard chairs· Remove victim from water, through lifting and/or carrying the victim with assistance· Sitting, walking, swimming, submersion under water, twisting, bending, climbing, pulling, pushing, squatting, crawling, kneeling, balancing, reaching, and coordination (eye, hand, foot).· Fall (slip, trip) Conditions that result in falls (impacts) from height or traditional walking and playing surfaces. · Heat illness/temperature extremes that result in heat stress, exhaustion, or metabolic slowdown such as hypothermia.· Chemical exposure – absorption through the skin, inhalation, or through the bloodstream that may cause illness, disease, or death.· Lifting and carrying, often 10-25lbs, frequently 26-50lbs, occasionally 50-250 lbs.· Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone.· Must be able to maintain long-term customer relationships, building trust and respect by consistently meeting and exceeding expectations.

Minimum Hourly or Salary: $17.95 - Maximum Hourly Salary: $19.50

  • This position is non-exempt from the provisions of Section 1 of the California Industrial Welfare Commission Orders.
  • In general, the position works on a schedule based on the business needs and may require early morning, evening, and weekend work.
  • May work up to, but not in excess of 29 hours per week or per the restriction of work permit (among all concurrent positions).

Benefits This position is employed through the Highlands Recreation District which offers employees of this classification to receive paid sick time, and Simple IRA retirement account participation with up to a 3% District match (if employee makes more than $5,000 in a year), and employee discounts in accordance with Highlands Recreation District Employee Handbook.

Required Staff Training Prior and during hiring process, all employees are required to complete the following compliance online training sessions through Paylocity. Employees will be enrolled in the training soon after their appointment is processed and will be notified via email from the HR department.

  • Job Health and Safety Training.
  • Injury and Illness Prevention Program - one-time course.
  • Discrimination and Harassment – required every two years.

Background Check and Fingerprinting Employees are required to undergo and complete a successful background check that includes verification of employment and education, as well as a check of criminal records for employment. Candidates for positions where the employee will come in regular contact with minors will be required to be fingerprinted. This policy includes emergency hires and may also be applicable to volunteers depending on the work they will be doing. In some cases, a background check will include a Department of Motor Vehicles check, as well as a check of licenses and certificates when applicable. California Child

Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act All childcare workers are considered mandated reporters under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and are required to comply with the requirements set forth by the Department of Social Services, Child Care Licensing.
