Recreation Leader Aide (Seasonal) $16.90-$18.87 Per hour
This is a seasonal position with an expected start date in June. You must be at least 16 years old to apply. Applicants should have availability on weekends, nights and weekdays.

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Recreation Aides assist in the organization of community recreation programs. These programs include the Day Camps, After-School Programs, field trips, special events and family programs for Oakley residents. Provides customer service and enforces recreation rules and regulations. Under the direction of the Recreation Manager, the Recreation Aides are responsible for the coordination and implementation of activities and programs for youth, set-up of facilities and equipment, and supervision of participants.
The following duties are typical for this position, but are not all inclusive. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address operational needs and changing operational practices.
  • Provide courteous, tactful, and polite customer service to the public at all times.
  • Leads participants in arts, sports, games, homework tutorials, life skills and recreational activities.
  • Performs general set-up, maintenance and light custodial duties (e.g. cleaning, arranging tables/chairs).
  • Answers a wide variety of questions from the public about City events, programs and services.
  • Enforces rules, regulations and policies--notify supervisor if witness to inappropriate behavior.
  • Serves as a positive role model.
  • Assists in the inventory of program supplies and equipment.
  • Assists in the planning and coordination of youth activities.

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Knowledge of: City's recreational activities and special events in order to answer questions from the public; techniques of instruction for conducting recreation programs in areas such as sports, games, arts and crafts; common sports, games and recreational activities; leadership techniques and great communication skills.

Ability to: Handle multiple tasks; ability to work with different age levels; ability to work with small and large groups; ability to work cooperatively with participants and staff in a positive and constructive manner; ability to follow written and oral instructions; ability to prepare written reports; work varying shifts, including nights, weekdays and weekends.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: One year of recreation or related leadership experience relevant to the area of assignment is desirable but not required.

Licensing/Certificate: Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain within six months of employment, appropriate, valid CPR and First Aid certificates. If the incumbent is 18 years of age, or older, they must complete and satisfactory pass Live Scan fingerprint screening or background check.

Must be at least 16 years of age as incumbents are responsible to care for youth.

Environment: Work is performed primarily in outdoor recreational facilities and parks; travel to different locations; incumbents may be exposed to inclement weather conditions and may have some contact with chemical agents used in pool maintenance; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces; incumbents may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office and recreation facility setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction.

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
