About This Position
The Yard Foreman is directly responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations, including deliveries and inventory management, of the lumberyard at Kirchner Building Centers; ensuring that the Yard team is equipped to provide excellent service and exceed customer expectations. The Yard Foreman should possess a safety-first mentality, have strong communication and problem-solving skills, display honesty and integrity, be proactive and above all, be a team player.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
In addition to all duties and responsibilities outlined in the Material Handler position, the Yard Foreman responsibilities are, but are not limited to, the following:
- Effectively lead, coach and mentor a team of yard workers, ensuring that they are meeting performance expectations and safety standards
- Responsible for opening / closing the lumberyard buildings for business each day
- Ensure equipment is in safe operating condition by maintaining logs and conducting daily inspections
- Maintain a clean and organized yard, ensuring that all products are properly stored, and organized
- Ensure that all customer orders are fulfilled accurately and in a timely manner
- Assist store manager in maintaining a proper level of product inventory
- Provide exceptional customer service, addressing any concerns or issues that may arise
- Work closely with inside sales team to ensure accurate and timely customer deliveries
- Collaborate with other departments to ensure that all operations are running smoothly
- Tallying loads before they leave the yard and ensuring sales tickets are accurate
- Ensuring deliveries made to the yard match what is on the vendor invoice and all materials are received correctly
- Responsible for quality control – no damaged product is sent out; no damaged materials are accepted in
- Package finished products for shipping (shrink wrapping, boxing, labeling etc.); Stage finished products for loading; Load finished products onto truck, railcar or customer vehicle
- Must report out of stock items in addition to surplus items to Store Manager
- Turn off and lock out equipment when not in use
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in a supervisory role in a lumber yard or similar environment and experience
- Strong leadership, communication and problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage inventory and maintain accurate records
- Safely operate forklifts and other yard equipment
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously

- Individual must be able to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds
- Must be able to stand, walk, bend for the duration of each shift
- Ability to work in all weather conditions
- Full time schedule includes a rotation of hours on Saturday’s
- Limited overtime based on business needs
- Working hours: Monday - Friday 7:00am - 5:00pm; Saturday 7:00am - Noon (hours may vary by location / season)
