About This Position

This position will be responsible for teaching the HiSET curriculum to offenders located inside the Women’s Eastern Reception, Diagnostic, and Correctional Center in Vandalia. The purpose of the program is to prepare students to obtain a high school equivalency certificate while incarcerated. Evening hours available Monday through Thursday. Must work a minimum of 2 days (6 hours) per week with opportunities to work up to 4 days (12 hours) per week.

This position requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and the ability to become certified by the State of Missouri to teach Adult Education & Literacy. Fingerprinting through MACHS required for certification. Must attend the Pre-Certification Workshop and Beginning Teacher’s Assistance Program within three months of hire date.

Department of Corrections requirements: Must have a two-step TB test with negative results followed by annual TB tests during birth month, and the ability to clear a MULES and NCIC background check.
The part-time AEL Instructor shall:
  1. Attend at least 20 hours of approved professional development trainings per fiscal year;
  2. Attend local and state professional development workshops;
  3. Maintain daily hours worked in the ezLaborManager system;
  4. Provide site coordinator and or director with all required records and reports;
  5. Assist in selection and development of instructional materials;
  6. Develop and provide individualized program of learning for each student;
  7. Provide group instruction utilizing instructional activities that are evidence-based and shown by practice and research to be effective instructional practices;
  8. Use student goals and needs, in combination with assessment results, to guide instruction;
  9. Provide for and supervise maintenance of student folders;
  10. Direct, guide, and evaluate student progress;
  11. Adhere to all Department of Corrections policies and procedures;
  12. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of the AEL Program, the Dean of Workforce Development and Technical Education or as designated by the President.
