About This Position
The Fire Protection Engineer, PE, will develop and stamp engineering plans, designs, specifications, and standards for various engineering projects and conduct studies, surveys, and cost estimates for these projects for their assigned division.
- Develop and seal technical drawings, specifications, and calculations for fire suppression, fire alarm, and life safety systems for both new construction and renovations.
- Perform hydraulic calculations and design layouts in accordance with NFPA standards.
- Ensure all designs address current and future operational needs, including projected growth, evolving transit demands, and emerging technologies.
- Ensure fire protection systems comply with NFPA, IBC, IFC, Massachusetts State Building Code, and other applicable regulations.
- Serve as the subject matter expert for fire protection codes and standards across MBTA facilities.
- Coordinate with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) for permitting, inspections, and code interpretation.
- Lead the production of bid documents and review construction submittals, shop drawings, and RFIs for compliance with approved designs.
- Provide engineering support during construction, including site inspections, troubleshooting, and witnessing functional acceptance testing.
- Evaluate capital project proposals with consideration for maintainability, long-term operations, and system integration.
- Collaborate with engineers, architects, contractors, and stakeholders to deliver projects on time, within budget, and to quality standards.
- Serve as a project team member or designated project manager; oversee schedules, budgets, and engineering specifications.
- Support capital and state-of-good-repair projects from concept through closeout.
- Work closely with MBTA maintenance and facilities staff to ensure installed systems are operable, maintainable, and aligned with operational goals.
- Develop and implement a Preventive Maintenance and Inspection Program for fire protection assets, ensuring alignment with service timelines and budget constraints.
- Create ITM procedures and address system deficiencies; recommend upgrades for aging infrastructure to enhance safety and performance.
- Support procurement of materials and services, ensuring compliance with contract requirements, technical standards, and delivery schedules.
- Coordinate and schedule system testing to improve the reliability of facilities and components.
- Conduct site inspections to verify material quality and installation compliance; prepare detailed reports.
- Conduct fire risk assessments and hazard analyses across MBTA facilities.
- Contribute to emergency response and evacuation planning.
- Liaise with local fire departments and emergency responders for pre-incident coordination.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
- A Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering or related Engineering Discipline* (*four (4) year Engineering degree related Engineering areas include Mechanical, Structural, Civil, Electrical Engineering)
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Fire Protection Engineering (Massachusetts preferred or ability to obtain by reciprocity within 6 months) and willingness to lead, stamp, and seal designs for the MBTA.
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in fire protection engineering design, construction, or maintenance, preferably in transit, infrastructure, or large-scale facilities.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, hydraulic calculation software (e.g., HASS, HydraCALC), and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong working knowledge of NFPA codes (especially NFPA 13, 72, 101), IBC, IFC, ADA, and Massachusetts building/fire codes.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write technical reports and interface with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders.
