Kraken Robotics is currently seeking a Mechanical Engineering Lead to join our Dartmouth, NS office.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Be a Senior member of the Autonomous Launch and Recovery System research and development team acting as an individual contributor to the design, manufacturing and production of these systems.
  • Provide leadership and structure to the Mechanical Engineering team in Nova Scotia that includes a varied group of talented engineers and technologists.
  • Provide regular check-ins and oversite, including mentoring and coaching, to the junior members of the team.
  • Design mechanical components and systems using 3D CAD software, ensuring compliance with technical specifications, industry standards, and project requirements. This applies to the breadth of Kraken products and systems such as: Launch and Recovery Systems, KATFISH, Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS) products, Deep Sea Batteries, Chargers and Mine Hunting Systems.
  • Conduct finite element analysis (FEA) and simulation studies, such as stress analysis, vibration, shock and thermal, to optimize designs for safety, performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Develop and maintain documentation to support Kraken’s products and systems, including various types of mechanical drawings, manuals, procedures, training material, interface instructions, etc.
  • Develop and maintain build instructions until official hand over to Production.
  • Develop comprehensive test plans and procedures to verify requirement compliance, validating performance, functionality, and reliability of Kraken products and systems.
  • Participate in projects through the entire design life cycle, including preliminary and detailed design, major design reviews, build and test.
  • Lead mechanical engineering tasks within the Battery Management System team for projects from concept to completion. Support the Project Management Office in developing work breakdown structures.
  • Manage product data and documentation using Product Data Management software ensuring accurate version control and revision history.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including Systems, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering, ILS, Production, Supply Chain Management, Configuration & Documentation Management, Project Management and Business Development.
  • Collaborate with suppliers, subcontractors, and regulatory authorities to ensure compliance with Kraken requirements, applicable standards, regulations, and classification society requirements.
  • Support Production in developing standard Work Instructions and Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Occasionally perform physical work including assembly, disassembly, maintenance, and testing of components.
  • Work with the Production department to provide technical assistance during the manufacturing process.
  • Work with clients to understand project requirements, provide operational support while in the field and provide a client interface for Kraken technical representation.
  • Participate in the design review and approval process.
  • Mentor Mechanical Engineers and Technologists.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Mechanical Engineering degree or equivalent engineering discipline with 8+ years experience.
  • P.Eng designation, and eligible for registration with Engineers NS.
  • Strong knowledge in general machine design (Seals, bearings, gearboxes, drive mechanisms, brackets, bolted joints, etc).
  • Proficiency in CAD software for 3D modelling and mechanical simulation.
  • Familiar with engineering review processes.
  • Knowledge of design standards.
  • Effectively focus on, and prioritize, project objectives while executing detailed design tasks.
  • Demonstrated technical skills along with a proven track record for success.
  • Strong written and oral communications skills (technical reporting).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be able to work independently, as well as effectively within a team environment.
  • High degree of organization and attention to detail.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with the following would be considered an asset:
    • Experience with Solidworks 3D CAD and Solidworks Simulation.
    • Experience with Solidworks PDM. Approval workflows, version control, file structure, etc.
    • Experience with ERP systems.
    • Experience with batteries and battery management systems.
  • PMP is considered an asset.
