Assistant Professor of Art HistoryThe Barnard Art History Department invites applications for the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor in Modern and Contemporary East Asian Art History which will begin July 1, 2026. Barnard is a premier liberal arts undergraduate college for women in New York City affiliated with Columbia University. Tenured and tenure-track faculty in Art History are also members of the graduate faculty of Columbia’s Department of Art History and Archaeology.Job Description:
Applicants must demonstrate a strong research profile and be able to contribute to the Barnard and Columbia curriculum on the art, architecture, and visual culture of East Asia at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Regardless of specific research area, candidates must be able to support undergraduate research in modern and contemporary art of all of East Asian art and to participate in Barnard’s undergraduate curriculum in art history more broadly. The position will also involve mentoring undergraduates, supervising senior theses, and contributing to the development of critical approaches to art history across both departments.

Candidates must have a PhD in Art History or a related field at the time of appointment.

One article- or chapter-length sample of scholarly writing
Only semi-finalists will be asked to identify at least three references. Referees will receive an email notification instructing them to upload confidential letters of recommendation within one week of receipt of the email.

Salary: $95,000 - $115,000
