Senior Packaging Engineer
Location: Leesburg, VA (5-15% Travel Required)

Company: VB Spine

Looking for a career where your work truly matters? At VB Spine, you’ll be part of a mission-focused team that supports surgeons during life-changing spinal procedures. We’re the largest privately held spine company and among the largest family-owned medical technology companies in the world, dedicated to innovation, surgeon partnerships, and improving patient outcomes in spine care. As a Senior Packaging Engineer in our R&D function within the Spine division, you’ll play a key technical role on the packaging team—developing and optimizing sterile and non-sterile packaging solutions that ensure medical devices are delivered safely, compliantly, and cost-effectively to the operating room.

What You’ll Do:

  • Provide technical support for the development of new packaging configurations and the sustainment of existing ones, balancing performance, cost, and reliability
  • Develop packaging designs from concept through final release, including detailed CAD documentation for both sterile and non-sterile medical device delivery
  • Create and maintain component specifications for primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging; develop, execute, and analyze packaging testing protocols
  • Collaborate with internal product development engineering teams to define optimal package design solutions while managing multiple projects to meet established timelines
  • Identify viable primary packaging options and alternatives, defining technical parameters and developing secondary shipment packaging
  • Support the design and validation of cases and trays for transportation and terminal sterilization of non-sterile devices intended for hospital use
  • Contribute to risk management documentation (e.g., DFMEA, PFMEA) related to packaging in coordination with cross-functional project teams
  • Work closely with suppliers and subcontractors to ensure designs are optimized, manufacturable, and seamlessly integrated with VB Spine operations
  • Support cost reduction initiatives and opportunities for indications or market expansion
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of emerging trends in packaging technology and materials while building credibility as a thought leader in sterile and non-sterile medical device packaging
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures governing packaging design and development

What You Bring:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Quality Engineering, or Microbiology required
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience in packaging design and development (medical device packaging strongly preferred)
  • Experience creating packaging designs in CAD (SolidWorks or Creo preferred)
  • Strong knowledge of Quality System Regulation (QSR) and familiarity with design controls in a regulated industry
  • Personally driven, detail-oriented, with excellent technical communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, work effectively in a team environment, and contribute to continuous improvement
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 30 pounds and work effectively in an office/lab setting with frequent use of hands for design and testing activities

Why VB Spine?
We believe in growing talent from within. At VB Spine, join a high-performing team, benefit from peer and executive mentorship, and help develop innovative packaging solutions that protect life-changing spinal implants and instruments—positioning yourself for growth and impact in a dynamic, mission-driven medical device company.
