About This Position
Position Purpose
The First Year Initiatives (FYI101) and First Year Experience (FYE101) courses provide students with the essential skillsets to positively influence their success in college. FYE101 and FYI101 will assist students in transitioning to the college environment by engaging them collaboratively with Vaughn community while developing a sense of belonging.
Major Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks
- Instruct a First Year Initiative/Experience course for one of the following student populations: flight majors, Arthur O. Eve HEOP, Aviation Training Institute (i.e., airframe and powerplant), or mixed-major, first year cohorts.Instruction should be engaging and involve discussions and group exercises.While some lecture is necessary, the instructor should strike an appropriate balance of in-class methodologies.
- Participate in pre-semester, mid-semester and post-semester curriculum alignment / faculty meetings.
- Formulate lesson plans, presentations and course materials to prepare first-year students for success in college through academic and social integration.This includes customizing existing content to suit the population of students assigned.
- Share syllabi and curricular innovations with fellow instructors and the Director of Student Success and Graduation Initiatives
- Collaborate with other departments at Vaughn and outside parties in order to bring guest speakers into the FYE/I classroom.
- Submit attendance information, NA census (never attended) information, midterm grades and final student grades via SONIS.

Education and/or Experience Requirements
- Master’s degree for FYI
- Bachelor’s degree for FYE
- Demonstrated ability to teach a college-level course.Significant industry experience in one of the areas served by Vaughn College may be considered in lieu of teaching experience. Other relevant higher education experience, such as working with cohorts in a relevant Opportunity Program may also be considered in lieu of teaching experience.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Zoom.

Work environment and physical functions
For in-person instruction, this position is located in a classroom environment. For remote synchronous instruction, this position is conducted via Zoom.
Preferred:
- Doctoral or master’s degree in a relevant discipline or in education.
- Experience with functions of academic support (e.g., tutoring, advisement) or student services (e.g., student activities, student clubs).
- For ATI major courses, knowledge of the FAA Airframe and Powerplant licensure.
- For flight major courses, knowledge of FAA flight certifications (e.g., private pilot, instrument).
- For asynchronous courses, evidence of having developed high-quality online content preferred.?
Compensation:
This position will be paid on an adjunct rate:
- $900 per lecture hour ($925 per lecture hour if holding a PhD)
- $625 per lab hour.
