About This Position

As a Charlotte County Fleet Technician, you’ll perform routine maintenance and other complex repairs on a wide range of county vehicles and heavy equipment. You will be a part of an elite team, working across automotive, mechanical, hydraulic, air conditioning, and electrical systems to keep everything safe, reliable, and ready to roll. You’ll diagnose and repair moderately multifaceted mechanical and/or electrical malfunctions on both gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment. As part of the team, you will perform repair and/or replace defective parts as needed, and keep accurate records of the repairs completed, parts used, and labor hours expended for each unit. The level of complexity in your work assignments will align with your experience and skill level—so whether you’re sharpening your diagnostic game or you’re already a go-to problem solver, you’ll have the opportunity to do meaningful, hands-on work that keeps the county moving.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Inspects, diagnoses, installs, maintains, repairs, and reconditions a variety of mechanical and/or electrical malfunctions of County gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment, including the following: automobiles, trucks, generators, pumps, welders, UTV’s, boats, trailers, and lawn mowers; small engine and grounds maintenance equipment; specialized heavy on/off road machinery; and other construction and maintenance equipment. Completes bumper to bumper repairs.
  • Repairs and/or replaces major and minor defective parts: all power-train components, engines, automatic, and manual transmissions, axles/differentials, steering, suspension, air and hydraulic brake systems, air conditioning and cooling, fuel and emissions, vacuum systems, body and trim, 12 – 48 volt electrical systems, electronic controlled systems, powertrain control module, body control module, diesel exhaust fluid, light control module, electronic automatic temperature control, anti-lock braking system, supplemental restraint system, power take-off, and auxiliary systems; and maintains related documentation.
  • Performs diagnostics and troubleshooting of all basic electronics, all electronically controlled systems and components, including engine performance for gas, diesel, and propane powered engines.
  • Performs routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment as per manufacturers specifications; fluids and filters replacements; complete inspections, including all operations systems functions in accordance with county standards.
  • May design and fabricate specialized equipment and tools.
  • May perform fabrication and modification, tooling, welding, piping, and electrical work incidental to completion of repair assignments.
  • Provides on-call after hours support as needed, per rotation schedule.
  • May conduct investigations, coordinate various functions, and other details needed to solve the varied technical problems encountered in the maintenance and repair of equipment.
  • Maintains records of repairs, parts used, and labor expended; obtains parts and supplies as needed.
  • Operates County vehicle to pick up parts and supplies from vendors; to road test vehicles repaired; or to make service calls.
  • Operates diagnostic hand tools, welder / plasma cutter, modern mechanical power tools, and electrical equipment to assist in tasks assigned.
  • Performs routine shop maintenance and housekeeping tasks, including administrative duties pertaining to department operation needs, such as answering the telephone.
  • Provides exceptional customer assistance, problem-solving, and/or complaint resolution by all forms of communication.

Education and Experience:

An equivalent combination of relevant training, education and experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Five (5) years of experience in performing routine to moderately complex mechanical repairs on vehicles and equipment.

Licenses and/or Certificates:

  • Must maintain a valid Commercial class “A” Driver’s License (CDL)
  • Preferred:
    1. Possession of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification or equivalent Manufacturer’s certification.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of departmental policies, plans, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, plans, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other job-related computer programs and software applications.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the repair, maintenance, and reconditioning of a wide variety of maintenance equipment.
  • Knowledge of the operation and repair of internal combustion gasoline and diesel engines and chassis parts.
  • Knowledge of electronic diagnostic and troubleshooting methods, including operation of tools for vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of hydraulics, lighting, diesel exhaust fluid, compressed air, vacuum and electrical controls, systems, and components.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Skill in the proper use and operation of tools and machinery used in automotive repair work.
  • Skill in effective communication, both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
  • Skill in the use of office equipment such as a computer, multi-line telephone system, scanner, fax machine, and copier.
  • Ability to evaluate the mechanical condition and performance of vehicles and related equipment before and after repair work.
  • Ability to detect and locate improper operating practices and malfunctions in mechanical equipment and recommend effective solutions.
  • Ability to interpret and work from electrical schematic sketches and repair diagrams.
  • Ability to make recommendations and to use resourcefulness and tact in solving new problems.
  • Ability to maintain records of mechanical maintenance activities.
  • Ability to ascertain priorities and meet deadlines and objectives.

  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to provide internal and external guidance and customer assistance via all forms of communication.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with managers, service providers, other employees, and the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, climbing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception. Frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a relatively safe, and secure work environment. Work typically requires moderate exposure to one or more disagreeable conditions (i.e., irate customers, outdoors weather conditions, excessive noise, extreme heat, odors, or dust).

The position requires moderate exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g., exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment, assault and battery, communicable disease, etc.).
