POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general guidance of a pharmacist and assistance from pharmacy leadership, they perform advanced tasks with awareness of legal requirements for supervision. Duties may include inventory management, patient scheduling, training of new personnel, supply management, preparing and processing daily work reports, coordination of deliveries and shipments, maintenance of the automated dispensing machines, including minor repairs and stock allocation, communication and participation in light management duties or other duties as assigned for support of the department and clinical practice. May fill in for any of the pharmacy technician positions.

Rate of pay: $23.80 - $34.28 per hour based on experience

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
  • Licensure/Certification/Registrations: State Board of Pharmacy Technician Certification.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent emphasis on science, math, and typing.
  • Experience: Five plus years of Pharmacy Technician experience. Strong administrative experience is strongly preferred.
  • Skills & Abilities: Able to apply necessary advanced mathematical concepts including fractions, percentages, and proportions. Able to work quickly under pressure while remaining attentive to detail. Able to follow precise instructions with attention to detail. Flexibility to adjust to changing conditions or details of the job and different shifts or positions as required. Maintains a familiarity with established policies, procedures, and practice regulations, JCAHO and other regulatory agencies. Completes all required department competencies annually. Able to work independently, completing required processes thoroughly, accurately, and in a timely manner. Knowledgeable of drug nomenclature and metric system. Thoroughly familiar with all aspects of pharmacy practice. Versatile and flexible in skills, knowledge, work habits and expectations. Proficient with computer operations and systems: Computer operating skills (ie Windows, printers, Outlook, WORD, Excel etc.). Strong organizational traits. Ability to plan, develop, and manage processes and programs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Prepares IV solutions and other sterile products.
  • Completes all dispensing and quality assurance records correctly, thoroughly, and on time.
  • Familiar with and properly employs aseptic techniques.
  • Able to perform independent calculations accurately.
  • Cleans and stocks IV and Unit Dose Areas:
    • Performs basic drug compounding (ointments, creams, oral solutions, etc.) under pharmacists' supervision.
    • Able to follow written recipes.
  • Able to use various measuring devices correctly.
  • Ensures all equipment is calibrated and working correctly on a routine basis and troubleshoots equipment problems when they occur.
  • Distributes STAT and non-STAT medications and other items to patient care units:
    • Distributes by courier.
    • Ensures meds are accurately distributed to designated locations in a timely manner.
    • Familiar with the layout of the facility.
  • Recognizes the importance of medications to the patient's welfare.
  • Ensures all controlled substance records have been received, and daily counts are correct; reports discrepancies.
  • Maintains accurate documentation and ensures proper distribution of narcotics; knowledgeable of and follows controlled substance regulations.
  • Processes credits for returned medications.
  • Restocks automated drug dispensing cabinets.
  • Refers unresolved problems to appropriate individuals in a timely manner
  • Reports errors and near errors prior to leaving the shift.
  • Files Records/Reports.
  • Performs quality assurance assignments and tasks.
  • Checks for and pulls outdated drugs from stock following policy.
  • Notifies supervisor immediately if unusual occurrences occur with narcotics and or outdates, inventory or deliveries.
  • Identifies issues of concern and reports those situations to a supervisor.
  • Assists pharmacists in data entry of patient specific information – refill requests, missing meds, etc;
  • Requires understanding of and ability to work with pharmacy information systems.
  • Completes specific job duties of an assigned daily position in a thorough and accurate manner.
  • Helps others as need arises.
  • Maintains positive behaviors, approaches, attitude and commitment to interpersonal service toward patients, visitors and co-workers.
  • Identifies other tasks to perform when the primary job is completed.
  • Demonstrates initiative and self-motivation.
  • Accepts individual responsibility and accountability for performance; accepts constructive criticism with a teachable attitude.
  • Performs additional duties as directed.
  • Knowledgeable of drug names and dosing directions (ex. Latin abbreviations commonly used in medicine).
  • Communicates and problem-solves effectively with coworkers and customers.
  • Completes and transmits supplemental order SMO.
  • Participates in training and orientation of other staff.
  • Investigates areas of concern and reports findings to the supervisor.
  • Investigates and solves pharmacy narcotic discrepancies.
  • Answers telephone and resolves problems or refers to appropriate individuals for resolution.
  • Obtains adequate information and assists when possible with telephone inquiries prior to transferring to a pharmacist.
  • Adjusts cabinet content and Par levels.
  • Follows up on overrides, discrepancies.
  • Maintains appropriate IV cleaning and maintenance records.
  • Ensures all IV equipment is in working order.
  • Completes air product sampling.
  • Able to work independently and make informed decisions regarding the appropriateness of missing meds.
  • Refills code carts in a timely manner.
  • Maintain an adequate inventory of medication obtained through direct providers (e.g. baclofen, frozen items, Botox).
  • Fills charge stock orders.
  • Obtains and/or negotiates loan/borrow with other institutions.
  • Updates and Maintains loan borrows with other institutions.
  • Conducts or assists in the interviewing and hiring of personnel for the pharmacy.
  • Ensures that identified problems and issues of concern are resolved or referred to appropriate parties.
  • Assists in the management of investigational drug studies.
  • Develops procedures for dispensing of investigational drugs..
  • Maintains records of dispensing of investigational drugs
  • Responsible for maintaining inventory and appropriate records for investigational drugs as defined by protocol.
  • Ability to verify the pharmacist's calculations.
  • Assists in developing and implementing policies and procedures.
  • Maintains performance improvement and monitoring records
  • Ensures performance measurements are completed and reported to appropriate parties.
  • Investigates; completes and resolves unusual occurrences for supervisor review.
  • Follows up on utilization and maintenance reports generated by cabinet.
  • Completes incident reports on cabinet/narcotic issues for supervisor review.
  • Provides a communication channel between pharmacist managers and technicians to ensure issues are dealt with in a timely manner.
  • Contributes to staff meetings by voicing concerns/issues of the technician staff.
  • Suggests changes in policy when new and better procedures are recognized.
  • Assists in developing and monitoring of performance improvement activities for technicians.
  • Resolve all problems independently, report to the supervisor.
  • Familiar with the "big picture" to recognize the priorities.
  • Assists in managing the pharmacy discharge process by scheduling all pharmacist and pharmacy intern patient appointments.
  • Communicates with outside pharmacies regarding the transfer of information.
  • Completes pre-admission investigations.
  • Completes Pharmacy charge audits.
  • Maintains pharmacy communication board.
  • Maintains document files.
  • May act as Pharmacy Buyer.
  • May act as Pharmacy Assistant.
  • May perform Pill Box Loadings as appropriate.
  • May Immunize if all State Board of Pharmacy requirements are met.
  • All personnel will use hand hygiene upon entering and leaving a patient's room; before and after individual patient care procedures, before and after group patient activity, after hands are contaminated with any body fluids, secretions, or excretions.
  • All Craig staff will take responsibility for informing patients, family, and visitors of the importance of hand hygiene in the healthcare and community environment.
