About This Position
Overview
Practices medicine under the supervision of the attending physician as directed by the appropriate state laws. Exercises independent judgment in the assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of medical processes and procedures in accordance with the Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner licensure regulations of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and as delineated in the written Scope of Practice/Protocol for Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner.
In addition to clinical responsibilities, the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Lead provides clinical leadership, mentorship, and promotes the professional development of Physician Assistants and/or Nurse Practitioners within their specialty. Serves as a liaison between the specialty’s APPs and the Medical Director. Oversees quality of care, productivity, onboarding, and orientation of new APPs. Participates in strategic initiatives and represents the APPs role in organizational efforts.
Clinical/Medical Practice
- Responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of healthcare issues in the designated specialty.
- Leads by example while providing exemplary direct patient care using evidence-based medical knowledge.
- Establishes and monitors standards of clinical performance for Physician Assistants/Nurse Practitioners in the specialty.
- Ensures compliance with regulatory and organizational standards.
- Serves as a clinical resource for patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams.
- Coordinates and encourages participation in quality, safety, and process improvement initiatives.
Teamwork and Communication
- Works in an independent and interdependent relationship with members of the medical staff, allowing for consultation, collaboration, or referral.
- Demonstrates effective communication and conflict resolution skills.
- Facilitates communication among specialties and providers to ensure continuity of care.
- Mentors the specialty’s APPs and fosters a culture of precepting and professional growth.
- Provides regular feedback to Medical Director.
- Leads educational lectures and presentations for new APPs and interdisciplinary teams.
- Evidence-based Professional Practice and Research
- Ensures practice is based on evidence and ongoing education.
- Participates in and leads quality improvement initiatives.
- Encourages and supports publication and presentation efforts by APPs.
- Participates in clinical research and planning for specialty development.
Professional Development
- Identifies and addresses ongoing educational needs of APPs.
- Mentors for leadership development and succession planning.
- Maintains certification(s), licensure(s), and clinical competency.
- Participates in strategic and operational meetings as the APP representative.
Leadership Responsibilities
- Participates in recruitment, screening, and selection of new hires.
- Oversees onboarding and orientation of new APPs.
- Conducts specialty specific APP meetings and appropriately collects and disseminates information.
- Develops or improves processes, workflows and patient care delivery services.
- Identifies opportunities for cost reduction and revenue generation related to the APP services.
- Attends all specialty meetings as the APP representative.
- Supports the Medical Director in completing annual performance evaluations.
Qualifications
- Master’s or Doctoral degree as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner from an accredited university.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience as a practicing Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience with Pediatric Specialists of Virginia.
- Leadership experience as an educator, preceptor, or council member preferred.
- Current Virginia licensure as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner and appropriate certification.
- Ability to be successfully credentialed at Inova Fairfax Hospital.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize, and lead effectively.
