Solterra School is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Education (SPED) Teacher to support students with diverse learning needs. The SPED Teacher will design and implement individualized instruction aligned with each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP), collaborate with families and staff, and foster an inclusive, supportive learning environment that promotes academic growth, independence, and social-emotional development.
What you'll do
1. Instructional Planning & Delivery
Develop, implement, and monitor IEPs in compliance with IDEA and Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) regulations Design and deliver differentiated, evidence-based instruction aligned with student goals and grade-level standards Utilize Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to ensure accessibility and engagement for all learners Maintain structured, supportive classroom environments that promote independence and self-regulation2. IEP & Compliance Management
Ensure timely and accurate IEP documentation, progress monitoring, and reporting Participate in IEP meetings, eligibility meetings, and multidisciplinary team reviews Maintain compliance with VDOE, IDEA, and school policies related to special education Collect and analyze data to inform instructional decisions and goal progress3. Collaboration & Team Integration
Collaborate daily with BCBAs, RBTs, OTs, SLPs, and support staff to align instructional and therapeutic goals Communicate effectively with students’ parents/guardians, representatives from their Local Education Agency, and/or other individuals/agencies regarding student progress, needs, and supports Lead collaborative efforts with school leadership and classroom staff to ensure effective implementation of IEPs and any behavior and/or instructional plans Model professional, solution-oriented collaboration within interdisciplinary teams4. Classroom Management & Student Support
Implement behavior support strategies aligned with behavior intervention plans and IEPs Support students’ social-emotional learning and functional skill development Maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment Participate in Safety Care or approved crisis intervention training as required5. Professional Development & Growth
Participate in ongoing professional development aligned with Solterra School’s instructional and therapeutic model Engage in coaching, feedback, and reflective practice to continuously improve instruction Support school-wide initiatives and contribute to a culture of learning and collaboration Other duties as assignedQualifications
Required
Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field Valid Virginia teaching license with Special Education endorsement Knowledge of IDEA, IEP development, and special education compliance Experience implementing differentiated instruction and data-driven practicesPreferred
Master’s degree in Special Education or related field Experience in a private day school or therapeutic educational setting Familiarity with UDL, SEL frameworks, and trauma-informed practices Experience collaborating with clinical teams (ABA, OT, SLP)Energetic Fit
