Position Overview

Springer Publishing is seeking a Senior Acquisitions Editor, Nursing & Medical Education to lead the acquisition and strategic development of a portfolio of nursing and selected medical education titles and related products. This role is responsible for identifying market opportunities, recruiting authors and editors, negotiating contracts, evaluating proposals, and guiding projects from concept through publication and beyond.

The Senior Acquisitions Editor serves as the central point person for assigned projects and works closely with internal teams across editorial, production, marketing, sales, and digital/product functions to build a successful publishing program. The ideal candidate brings strong acquisitions experience, sound market judgment, excellent author relationship skills, and a deep understanding of higher education and professional publishing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Acquire and develop new titles, revisions, and related publishing products in nursing and selected medical areas
  • Build and manage a publishing portfolio, including frontlist development, revision planning, and pipeline growth
  • Identify market opportunities through competitive review, customer and faculty conversations, publishing trends, and market research
  • Recruit authors, editors, and other subject matter experts aligned with market needs and publishing goals
  • Negotiate author contracts and related agreements in collaboration with internal stakeholders
  • Evaluate proposals and prepare business cases, publishing plans, and acquisition presentations for internal review and approval
  • Serve as the primary strategic and editorial lead for assigned projects from concept through publication and lifecycle planning
  • Work closely with authors to shape content, structure, positioning, and pedagogy to ensure market relevance and product success
  • Partner with editorial, production, marketing, sales, and digital/product colleagues to support development, launch, and performance of acquired titles
  • Present publishing plans and product strategy to internal sales and marketing teams and support key internal meetings
  • Monitor curriculum trends, accreditation and competency developments, customer needs, and competitive activity within nursing and medical education
  • Contribute to strategy for ancillary, digital, and format opportunities that strengthen product value and market performance
  • Maintain strong external relationships within academic and professional communities relevant to the publishing program

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in acquisitions editorial, commissioning, or portfolio management within academic, professional, or educational publishing
  • Strong preference for experience in nursing, medicine, healthcare, or allied health publishing
  • Demonstrated success acquiring and developing commercially viable publishing projects
  • Experience recruiting authors/editors and negotiating publishing contracts
  • Strong market awareness and ability to identify publishing opportunities and translate them into effective acquisition plans
  • Experience preparing and presenting proposals, publishing strategies, and business cases to internal stakeholders
  • Excellent relationship-building, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a collaborative, fast-paced environment
  • Strong analytical and business judgment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and standard publishing tools/systems

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience publishing for undergraduate or graduate nursing, APRN, medical, or health professions education markets
  • Familiarity with curriculum trends, accreditation standards, licensure/certification dynamics, and adoption patterns in healthcare education
  • Experience with both print and digital publishing models, including ancillary and platform-based content

Physical Requirements

This is a hybrid position and requires the ability to come into the office as needed. This position requires occasional travel and the ability to drive and/or fly to destinations as required (~10% of time).
