Job Overview
The Armed Security Officer Lead is an experienced, armed security position responsible for leading, mentoring, and overseeing the Security team. This role works closely with the Security Supervisor to support team operations and handle various assigned duties. In addition to team leadership, the Armed Security Officer Lead acts as a mentor to new officers during their on-boarding and training process, ensuring that corrective actions are recommended as needed. The position also requires serving as an armory custodian, assisting in the issuing and returning of weapons for security officers.
Essential Functions
- Oversees, instructs and coordinates the activities of the security squad
- Make necessary adjustments to schedules in the event of unplanned absences.
- Review, coordinate, and authorize time-off requests.
- Conduct inspections of security posts to ensure tasks are properly completed by officers.
- Assist the supervisor with performance evaluations of squad members.
- Recommend corrective actions and additional training opportunities.
- Oversee the issuance and return of security weapons in the armory.
- Lead the response to potential threats.
- Respond to emergency situations including disturbances, active threats, and escalated incidents involving patients, visitors, staff, and guests.
- Respond to activations of the external weapon detection system and enforce the weapons-free campus policy.
- Quickly assess situations and, if necessary, use defensive measures including tasers or firearms, following legal guidelines and institutional policies.
- Respond to alarm activations including duress, fire, intrusion and elevator entrapment.
- Conduct regular security patrols and monitor camera systems to ensure compliance with regulations and a secure premise.
- Ensure all security-sensitive areas are properly secured.
- Observe and report security and safety issues, including equipment malfunctions.
- Conduct investigations and write reports on incidents including criminal activity, slip and fall accidents, workplace violence, employee misconduct, and traffic crashes.
- Respond to medical assistance calls and control scenes as needed.
- Assist in employee terminations, prisoner patient security, and decedent release to funeral homes.
- Provide patient medication transport and conduct fire watches.
Education
- High School Diploma/GED Required
Licensure / Certification
- Driver's License (DL) (Must obtain a Florida license within six (6) months of hire)
- Florida Class "D" Security Officer License (must obtain within 90 days of hire)
- Florida Class "G" Firearm License (must obtain within 90 days of hire)
- IAHSS Basic Certification (must obtain within 90 days of hire)
- BLS w/CPR certification must be obtained within six (6) months of hire.
Responsibilities:
- Proficiency in using security software programs including camera systems, card access, visitor management, report writing, and alarm monitoring systems.
- Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate team goals, provide mentorship, and work collaboratively with team members.
Minimum Qualifications:
- At least five (5) years of law enforcement experience. Military service or armed healthcare security experience may be substituted on a one-for-one basis.
- One (1) year lead or supervisory experience OR one (1) year of internal experience as a Security Officer with Moffitt.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice or related field
- Ten (10) years of law enforcement experience or a combination of ten (10) years of law enforcement and armed healthcare security experience, with at least five (5) years in law enforcement.
- Two (2) years of lead or supervisory experience OR two (2) years of internal experience as a Security Officer III with Moffitt.
Minimum Skills/Specialized Training Required:
- AVADE defense certification must be obtained within 90 days of hire.
- Axon/Taser® Instructor certification must be obtained within six (6) months of hire.
- "Stop the Bleed” certification must be obtained within six (6) months of hire.
- BLS w/CPR certification must be obtained within six (6) months of hire.
- Proficiency in MS Office and other computer programs, with the ability to learn new software.
- Excellent observational skills with a keen ability to notice unusual activities or situations.
- Ability to review written reports for accuracy and completeness, providing recommendations for corrections.
- Sound judgment in identifying and handling complex or dangerous situations.
- Conflict resolution skills.
- Proficiency with security equipment including firearms, tasers, and handcuffs.
- Strong knowledge of firearm and taser safety protocols.
- Knowledge of healthcare security procedures and patient privacy regulations (HIPAA).
- Familiarity with local, state, and federal laws governing security officers and the use of force, including firearms.
