About This Position
Job Summary:
The Slitter Operator sets up, starts and stops, adjusts, monitors, tends and operates slitters to cut coils of metal into specified widths and lengths. The incumbent follows slitter manufacturer instructions for starting and stopping and adjusting the slitter which involves both using integrated machine controls as well as measurement and hand tools for making adjustments. Monitoring includes the observation of various meters and gauges that indicate machine operating parameters and job progress. As part of the monitoring responsibility, the operator is charged with insuring that the slitter is operated according to manufacturer’s recommendations and finished goods meet customer specifications.
The Slitter Operator, with the assistance of others, loads coils on the slitter for processing. In this job function, the incumbent operates overhead cranes and forklifts. As part of this responsibility, the incumbent utilizes location accepted practices or devises methods for next-coil-transitions. The Slitter Operator may perform alone, assist others, or direct others in the unloading of finished goods from the slitter. This includes the collection, packaging, transfer, and tagging of finished goods.
The Slitter Operator directs others in the monitoring and verification of the quality and adherence to specifications of finished goods. This includes visual observation and inspection of material for surface defects, burrs, etc., the use of precision measurement tools for size verification, and the monitoring of on-board electronic precision measurement tooling (gamma gauges, e.g.). The operator also operates test equipment such as Rockwell hardness testers to insure compliance with specifications.
The Slitter Operator uses, completes, or produces documentation that indicates job status and progress, materials used, returned, or scrapped, results of monitoring, measuring, or testing, and placement or identification of finished goods according to policies and procedures established at specific locations.
The Slitter Operator is responsible for the general cleanliness and housekeeping of the applicable work area. These responsibilities insure uninterrupted operation of production equipment and a clean, clutter free, safe working environment. In the event of malfunction, the Slitter Operator is responsible for the notification of facility maintenance and/or supervisory personnel.
The Slitter Operator performs all duties according to location policies and procedures, manufacturer instructions, and within accepted safety rules and practices. The incumbent is aware of all applicable emergency procedures and may be called upon to direct others in these procedures. The Slitter Operator gives work directions to various helpers in the course of operating the slitter. The incumbent is also called on to provide on-the-job instruction in the essential functions of the Slitter Operator job for the purpose of developing the skills of others.
At the discretion of supervision or management, the Slitter Operator may be asked to perform other duties and tasks or fulfill other responsibilities for which (s)he is qualified at any time.

Qualifications, Certifications, and Experience:
- High school education or equivalent preferred – can be offset by acceptable related experience
- Experience sufficient to have demonstrated proficiency in job requirements of Slitter Operator; prefer apprenticeship under the direction of experienced and competent slitter personnel
- Certified training pursuant to OSHA industrial truck (forklift) regulations

Pay starts at $18 for inexperienced candidates and would increase based on slitter operating experience.
