Coder/Abstractor-Inpatient Level III

Position Summary:

Coder Abstractor Inpatient Level III codes and abstracts medical records according to established guidelines; performs limited analysis, which includes validation of appropriate documentation substantiate coding. Must perform physician queries as needed.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:

1. Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.
2. Demonstrates ability to use all of HIM software, including Solventum (Formerly 3M) 360 Encompass, EPIC, CloudMed, Iodine, and SmarterDx, etc.
3. Codes and abstracts to the highest level of specificity.
4. Accurately apply AHA Coding guidelines as they pertain to ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS
5. Adheres to quality and coding productivity standards set forth by Coding Manager. Must maintain a quarterly accuracy rate of 95% or higher.
6. Performs follow-up as necessary within time frame set forth by Coding Manager. Follows escalation Policy to insure timely billing.
7. Performs all other related duties as assigned.
8. Completes annual department/hospital competency requirements in NetLearning.
9. Attends staff meetings or equivalent as requested/required to update knowledge related to current department/hospital issues and coding updates.
10. Maintains accreditations and attends education sessions arranged by the hospital.
11. Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Education & Experience Requirements:

Certified Coding Specialist (AHIMA) and/or Certified Inpatient Coder (AAPC) and High School Diploma or GED required. Associate’s degree, RHIT or RHIA preferred.

Strong applied knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS coding, MS-DRG, APR-DRG, and ROM/SOI assignment and logic.

Medical terminology and knowledge of anatomy and physiology required.

In-service training on use of HIM Medical Records applications and computer coding/abstraction system.

Basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel is required.

Physical/Mental Demands/Requirements & Work Environment

• May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital’s SDS (Safety Data Sheet) database and may be accessed through the hospital’s Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS database can also be found at the hospital switchboard, or online.

• Must be a team player; must be able to retain composure under stress.
• Ability to remain stationary for extended periods of time.
• Must be able to use/troubleshoot various departmental office equipment, as well as one’s own remote computer.

Salary Range:$61,972.95- $92,959.23
